In the USA, obesity is set to overtake smoking as the most preventable cause of premature death. Research shows that witout accesss to regular physicial activities, children gain weight twice as fast compared to those who regularly exercise. Sixty-one percent of overweight 5- to10-year-olds already have at least one risk factor for heart disease, and 26% have two or more risk factors. Obesity is the biggest medical epidemic that America faces today and, shamefully, one that is self-inflicted. “Obesity” is defined as “weighing at least 20 percent more than your "ideal weight" or “having a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or more”. Obesity is a floorboard to diseases associated with the heart, kidneys, lungs and kidneys. Obesity's complications include diabetes, hypertension, and atherosclerosis. Skyrocketing obesity epidemic in Black American communities is associated with the poor food environment in predominantly Black American and low-income neighborhoods; there is an abundance of fast-food restaurants serving low-cost high-calorie meals of low nutritional value.
